The Persian carpet is an essential part of Persian art and culture. Carpet weaving is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding manifestations of Persian culture and art, and dates back to the Bronze Age

The earliest surviving corpus of carpets come from the Persian Safavid dynasty (1501-1736) in the 16th century. However, painted depictions prove a longer history of production. There is much variety among classical Persian carpets of the 16th and the 17th century. Common reasons include the displacement of vine networks, arabesques, palmettos, cloud bands, medallions, and overlapping geometric compartments rather than animals and humans. Persian Art focuses on Shiite Islam, do not take the hard line against human representation we see the influence Sunni Turkish carpet weaving. Figurative drawings are particularly popular in the Iranian market and are not as common in carpets exported to the west.

Some use the words carpet and rug interchangeably. Historically, however, some have distinguished between carpet and rug based on the size (the first is larger) or use (carpets on the floor, rugs on beds or at home). For the sake of clarity, some textile scholars also differentiate between carpets and carpets. In this usage, the latter are wall to wall and are often woven with loops or "roll goods", most often in widths of 12 feet, but sometimes in widths to 15 feet. In the real estate and home improvement industries a distinction is made between carpet (or rug) and carpet. The former indicates a covering to be placed on the floor and the second is a floor covering that is loose-laid, most often for decorative purposes.
