American Indian art encompasses many types of arts and crafts, from the most traditional and / or stereotypically Native American art such as beadwork and pottery, modern photography, beautiful paintings, sculptures, etc.. There are many art auctions both online and off, thus presenting Native American art.
In this article we to discuss one of the most traditional and historically relevant branches of American Indian art: beadwork. Beads Native American peoples had and has both practical and decorative, utilitarian as well as rich symbolic meaning.
Beads and preparation of the accounts themselves is a very old craft. Stone, bone and shell beads (such as turquoise and semi-precious stones) are still made of the same old way. Little affected by modern technology, the production of accounts so it follows by almost exactly the same as the peoples for thousands of years.
Mar pieces of shell accounts are among the most popular and well known pieces of regional trade importance for thousands of years. Almost everyone has seen American Indian art pieces, from beaded necklaces to purses, belts and such.
For decades modern beadwork has been replicated in oriental factories and very cheaply imported. This makes it an element of competition against the top bead quality made by American Indian artisans. Native American crafts people have lost several million dollars (just over a period of eight years during the 1980s) to these fake native beads and beadwork pieces.
Historically, the accounts were carved from turtle shell, deer antler and hooves. These are often used to make noises or ringing of the parts used in the dance. Hunters often wore necklaces together with animal parts, as bear claws or wolf claws. These show skill of a hunter. Bones and seeds were often steamed to soften them for stringing and / or bend in several ways.
As an example of beadwork used for a more practical purpose, the League Iroqois (Haudenosee) used white and purple strings of beads made from shells of fresh water clam to record sacred ceremonies, treaties and songs. This procedure was used before and after the arrival of European settlers.
Many types of agreements were recorded with strings of beads such. They were highly valued and cared for by their owners. European settlers mistook this care and respect for accounts of wampum as a sign accounts that had a monetary significance. As such, they erroneously assumed that the word wampum refers to money, when in fact these accounts were far more important, as very important original documents.
For chain of beads, Native Americans used animal tendons which divides very fine with which accounts to attach to clothing, fibers, although rarely strong enough to hide or strips of nettle were used for these purposes.
Today, the Navajo and as some people still make the old grain type called heishii. This is by far the most popular type and large number of beads which is still done today as was in ancient times. These collars are also known as a collar of history, as they can be used for storytelling, with each bead representing a character.
The accounts and beads are an important part of archaeological explorations of European prehistory. Beads have survived thousands of years and tell many fascinating stories on the times that were not present to testify. This is particularly true of the beads mad of sea shells. Ancient shell beads have been found thousands of miles sea, indicating the various trade routes and contacts among different groups of people.
Today American Indian artists even create designs aa digital trinkets to help make actual beadwork pieces. Thus, the complex designs and pieces can be tested on the screen before starting the project. This undoubtedly added to the creative process for many beadwork artists.
Beadworking weaves through native history both in ancient times as well as technology today's modern computer. The most important aspect of beads, however, is what can be sold or gained, but personal pieces that are only found among family and friends. The true meanings behind these pieces are personal associations tied to visions, important perspectives and other things that a guy wants to be remembered.
