Over development at beaches can hinder the natural processes of erosion, deposition and natural wave action.
When man-made barriers to wave action are erected off-shore to protect buildings or the shoreline for water action, the beach in the protected zone may escape direct erosional processes for years while, the area just outside this protected zone may receive additional wave action from the deflected energy of the barriers.
The stakeholders are property owners who seek to protect their homes or buildings from loss to natural elements, unfortunately, the sea level changes eustatically, and the land level changes isostatically and tectonically. This brings changes in the base level, which affects the beach equilibrium profile. As the geomorphologic development advances, the supply of sand from erosion of coastal bluffs can increase of decrease.
Eventually, when all the protective barriers begin to hinder the natural erosional processes to a degree that it negatively impacts other coastal features, coastal management agencies attempt to balance all the competing interests.
