In his masterpiece, The Grace Awakening, Charles R. (Chuck) Swindoll presents himself as the inclusion of "the torch of freedom," as put forward by the reformers Protestants like Martin Luther. In this he takes his readers to believe that by following him and his teaching at Grace Awakening being faithful to the teaching of Historic reform in the doctrines of grace and faith. Consider:
"The achievement must accompany sincere faith ... We continue to hear that "different gospel" and is a lie. It is heresy. It is the antithesis of the true message that sparked Reform: Sola Fide - faith alone "(Grace Awakening, p.86).
"When the European sixteenth-century reformers pursued the torch of freedom ... grace was the battle cry: salvation by grace alone a walk of faith without fear of eternal damnation "(Grace Awakening, p. xiv).
In fact, the "spark that ignited the Reformation" was Sola Fide or faith. However, reformers do not define their terms as Chuck Swindoll does. Swindoll's understanding of the promises of grace, "regardless of how you choose to live, you can not live so bad that God says: "You are no longer mine '" (Shedding light on our dark side, tape sld 1A). Swindoll belief about ultimate salvation of the reprobate yet most need their removal from the Bible (and Reform) linking the works to genuine faith.
Chuck Swindoll, in essence, is lined with Reformers and leaves the reader with the false naive notion that his views on grace and faith are identical to those of the reformers. Contrary to Swindoll, however, Luther insisted that works or "human progress" as Swindoll says, go arm authentic, saving faith. For the saving faith Luther said:
"Faith has to be sincere. Must be a faith that does good works through love. If faith is no faith no love true. So the apostle closes the way of the hypocrites in the kingdom of God ... to believe "If faith justifies without works, we should not work" is neglected God's grace. Idle faith is not justifying faith. Thus Paul presents concise life of a Christian. Inside it consists in faith towards God, love out our fellows "(Luther, Commentary on Galatians).
RC Sproul in his book faith alone, he wrote: "The reformers saw saving faith as necessarily, inevitably, and immediately obtain the fruits of works. Martin Luther insisted that faith that justifies is a fides viva, vital and living faith which gives the fruit of his doings. "Contrary to this, Chuck Swindoll believes it is a lie and another gospel to insist that works must accompany genuine faith. And it does as if speaking on behalf of the reformers!
Obviously, Chuck Swindoll leads the uninformed reader to believe that the awakening of Grace is a book the recovery of lost truths of the Reformation of the insidious hands of contemporary lawyers who have perverted them. In truth, however, Luther himself tenaciously fought against the understanding of grace and faith presented in the book of Swindoll.
Like those who invent history to buttress to their agenda, Chuck Swindoll has revised history of the Reformation. Does Swindoll believe that "justifying faith is a living faith that always yields the fruit of works" as did Luther? Does Swindoll insist that "whoever does not do good works without faith", as the reformers? Rather, Chuck Swindoll teaches the opposite: it is heresy to say that the works should accompany faith. And it does as if it accurately represents the Reformation! Is not that dishonest? How can it be anything other than the revision of history?
