Having become one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe since the end of the Cold War, Prague is considered by many to be overflowing with stag and hen weekends. However, this picture ignores the inherent cultural and scenic beauty of Prague, who made an excellent tourist destination in the first place. Whether you're just after cheap beer or you want to immerse yourself in the sights, there is a place in the stunning capital of the Czech Republic to secure that leave you breathless - the Old Town Square.

The Old Town lies at UNESCO of the city, protected historic and was the original place of settlement in Prague before the new town was built in the fifteenth century. The Plaza of Old Town forms the center and is one of the most visited attractions in the city. Situated between the Plaza Wenceslas (the center of New Town) and the Charles Bridge, which crosses the river Vlata, the Old Town Square is streaming with tourists in the summer and hosts a market Prague popular Christmas and New Year celebrations in the winter.

Among the most outstanding attractions are the Plaza of the Gothic Tyn Cathedral, which has occupied the site since 1256 and the Church of St. Nicholas, an example of church architecture of Prague, which dates back to the Baroque era. By far the most characteristic popular Old Town Square is the Astronomical Clock in Prague, a medieval astronomical clock that mounts on the southern wall of Old Town Hall. Also known as the "Astronomical Prague, Astronomical Clock, is said to date back to 1410 and is one of several astronomical clocks that were built during the centuries XIV and XV; other examples of what can be found in Strasbourg, Padua, and even Norwich.

Also in the Old Town Square is the statue of the reformer Jan Hus religious. Hus was an important thinker of the fourteenth century Czech philosopher and religious reformer whose teachings were considered heretical by the Catholic Church in this time. His conviction and execution resulting from burning at the stake in 1415 made him a martyr for the Protestant cause and a key influence on Martin Luther King. Every 6 July, the Czech Republic celebrates the Day of Jan Hus and the statue of him in the Old Town Square was built in 1915 to mark the 500th anniversary of his death.

Old Town Plaza is not only the whole story, however. Today, many important Czech hockey and football matches shown on big screens in the square and the area is wrapped in a frenzy of activity when the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve. And with the many flights to Prague departing from the UK on a regular basis, there is no reason to visit. After all, might not be able to get rid of compensation tourists, but there is no reason why you will not succeed in getting lost in the historical wonders of Prague.
