In the 1990s scientists in Japan developed a combination of binders and fine particles of metal to create a material with properties of malleable clay, precious metal known as Clay (PMC). This product is now available for the jewelry industry and for the fans too.
MPC is also commonly known as' Silver Clay, "which, when heated, turns into pure silver. The binding material contains particles silver together. When the clay is fired as normal, the folder burned, allowing the silver particles bond and form a solid piece of pure silver. Beauty silver clay is that it can be easily used at home with only a few pieces of specialist equipment and can provide a new dimension to your jewelry techniques.
Since its initial development, Silver Clay has undergone a transformation, making it easier to use than ever. The first examples of the clay needed to be fired at very high temperatures, which requires a furnace to complete the process. Modern metal clays are now capable of being fired in a common kitchen oven or even a gas torch. Despite an oven is not strictly necessary with modern materials, is still a useful item to have jewelry workshop, allowing the user to control the temperature of the shots with precision. Too high and silver are melted in a bubble. Two low and the folder will not burn completely, leaving the final piece weak.
WCP principles suffered a great disadvantage - the contraction. Modern metal clays are much more resistant to shrinkage during cooking processes, making them easier to manipulate into patterns much more delicate and complex. Acceptable levels of contraction of the modern materials are between 10-15% depending brand.
Metal clay can be diluted with water to make a paste that can be used to join elements, repair of cracks and use as a surface texture. Because the clay is very thick, stir in additional water may not dilute the mixture. The medium has to be mixed, rather than adding oil paint thinner with a spatula. Once the desired consistency is reached, allow the mixture to "rest" in an airtight container for a few hours before use.
Metal clay is perfect for the development of texture in one piece, and this can be achieved by simply pressing the pattern on the surface of the clay. Rolls of fabric, including or lacy leaves can be used to achieve a delicate finish on the surface of the silver piece.
Cooking temperatures of clay are about 1500 degrees F, which is applicable for most types of metal clay. Cooking time is about ten minutes, making the use of a small furnace to the optimal choice for cooking processes.
Once fired, the metal can be soldered, filed, sanded and polished, like any other metal, but is recommended for brightening the first surface of the compact structure of the surface. Once completed, the piece can be used like any other piece of silver jewelry.
Silver clay is widely available jewelry and craft vendors, the two leading brands are Precious Metal Clay (PMC) and Art Clay Silver. Gold clay is available, but they are prohibitively expensive for novice users. Silver clay is a good starting point when exploring this versatile medium.
