
William Aloysius Keleher: A great man
William Aloysius Keleher was born in 1886 in Lawrence, Kansas. His parents, David and Mary Ann Keleher Keleher moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1889. There, William enrolled in St. Mary Parish school and studied until 1900 when he began working as a messenger for Western Union Telegraph Company. His initial position was that of a counter clerk. However, he was promoted to telegraph operator in a short time. William tried different career alternatives after that. For a brief period, worked for the school board and a development company called Bluewater (both located locally). Their commendable writing skills drew the attention of local journalists who immediately appointed him as a newspaper reporter in the year 1908. Meanwhile, he also wrote for the Albuquerque Journal and Albuquerque Evening Herald. Later, serve as managing editor of both newspapers. He came in contact with many prominent New Mexico, while worked as a reporter. This was when she got interested in the law, respecting contemporary events. William enrolled in the Faculty of Law, Washington and Lee University in September 1913 and after only two years, successfully graduated in 1915. He was admitted to the Bar of New Mexico in that year. After returning to Albuquerque, he began working as city attorney. He then joined a law practice with George Downer, which lasted until 1930. The following year, he started another practice with AH McLeod. It should be noted that the company still exists after so many years. On the other hand, is considered one of the best law firms in the area.
Outside of professional life, William was also an active citizen Mexicans with diligence. For several years, served as chairman of the Democratic Republic of the Central Committee of the State of New Mexico. It was under the State Council of Finance from 1932 to 1949. When the First National Bank of Albuquerque failed miserably in 1933, served as his guardian. It will not be an exaggeration to say that most important of William professional activities were his writings. He was a keen scholar of history of New Mexico and officially became an author with authority on the subject in 1929, when he delivered a speech on the Maxwell land grant at a conference in Amarillo, Texas. Interestingly, the result was his first book entitled "grant Maxwell Land "(1942). He came to write more books after publishing this work. It is indeed a laudable fact that William never forgotten her regular schedule firm, despite the demands of writing books like The Fabulous Frontier, the turmoil in New Mexico, violence in the country of Lincoln, New Mexico I knew, and memoirs. His latest book came out in 1969.
William has been honored by numerous groups of their impressive achievements. Among them, the Immaculate Conception Church Concepcion, Tucker Chapter of Phi Delta Phi, and Phi Beta Kappa were considered more elite. In addition, William was also honored by the formal education few. He received an honorary Master of Arts and an honorary LL.D in 1946 and 1968, respectively, of the same university (University of New Mexico). He received the other LL.D University of Albuquerque in 1968. Finally, it was included in the prestigious New Mexico Hall of Fame in the year 1964.
William Aloysius Keleher was a man multifaceted lived in Albuquerque for eighty-four of eighty-six. In addition to his law profession, who also managed to become an author internationally renowned historian and journalist. He died on December 18, 1972 leaving behind his legacy and achievements. He will always be remembered and revered.
